We have compiled the latest 2026 waste collection rules from the Town of Newmarket so you never miss a pickup. And when the town's curbside program won't accept your items — like construction debris, large cleanouts or bulk waste — Forever Green Bin Rental is your local solution.

Newmarket Collection Schedule & Calendar

How Often Is Each Stream Collected?

Garbage
Every other week on your scheduled collection day
Recycling (Blue Box)
Every other week on your scheduled collection day
Green Bin (Organics)
Weekly on your scheduled collection day

Newmarket divides the town into collection zones, each with a specific day of the week. Garbage and recycling alternate weeks, while organics are picked up every week. The Town mails a 2026 Waste and Recycling Calendar to every household. If you did not receive one, contact Newmarket Customer Service at info@newmarket.ca or 905-895-5193.

Set-out reminders

Place all containers at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. You may put them out as early as 5 p.m. the night before. Remove emptied containers and any uncollected waste by 8 p.m. on collection day.

Pro tip: Download the Recycle Coach app to get push notifications for your zone's collection day, holiday schedule changes and what-goes-where searches.

Newmarket Garbage Collection Rules & Bag Limits

Free Garbage Allowance

You may place a maximum of 3 garbage bags or containers at the curb every other week with no tags required.

  • Black or green plastic bags securely tied (max 26" × 36")
  • Reusable rigid containers with removable lids (max 125 L, 20" × 36")

Extra Garbage Tags

Need more than 3 bags? Attach a Town of Newmarket garbage tag to each additional bag (up to 3 extras). Maximum 6 total bags per collection.

Tag pricing:
5 tags for $15.00
Available at Municipal Offices, Magna Centre, Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, Newmarket Public Library and the Operations Centre.

Weight & safety limits

  • Each bag/container must not exceed 22 kg (50 lbs)
  • Do not overfill containers — lids must close
  • Loose material (dirt, vacuum dust) must be bagged or it will be rejected
  • Do not place bags on snow banks in winter

Blue Box Recycling in Newmarket

Important change: As of December 31, 2025, Newmarket's curbside recycling is managed by Circular Materials (contractor: GFL) as part of a mandated Provincial program. Your collection day has not changed, but your program now follows province-wide standards.

Accepted in your Blue Box

  • Paper, newspapers, flyers, envelopes
  • Cardboard and boxboard (flattened, max 60 cm)
  • Metal cans, aluminum foil and trays
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles, jugs, tubs and lids
  • Cartons (milk, juice, soup)

NOT accepted

  • Plastic bags, wrap, film or bubble wrap
  • Styrofoam containers and cups
  • Paper towels, tissues and napkins
  • Alcoholic beverage containers (return to Beer Store)
  • Broken glass, ceramics or dishware
  • Scrap metal or electronics
Recycling tips: Empty and scrape containers before recycling. Flatten cardboard to save space. Put items loose in the blue box — never in plastic bags. There is no limit to the number of blue boxes you can set out.

Green Bin (Organics) Collection

Newmarket's green bin is collected weekly. This is where most of your household waste should go — the more you divert to the green bin, the less garbage you produce and the fewer tags you need to buy.

Accepted in Green Bin

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Meat, fish, poultry and bones
  • Dairy products and eggshells
  • Coffee grounds, filters and tea bags
  • Bread, grains, pasta and rice
  • Food-soiled paper towels and napkins
  • Houseplants and floral arrangements
  • Pet waste and kitty litter (in paper bags)

NOT Accepted

  • Plastic bags, wrappers or containers
  • Biodegradable or compostable plastic bags
  • Diapers and sanitary products
  • Medical waste or sharps
  • Cooking oils and fats (liquid)
  • Yard waste (use paper bags or open-top cans)

Tip: Line your green bin with newspaper or paper bags to keep it clean. You can also purchase a kitchen catcher ($8.94) or a new green bin ($30.49) from the Town. Broken green bins are replaced free by calling GFL at 1-866-421-5625.

Yard Waste Collection

During the spring-to-fall season, Newmarket collects yard waste on your scheduled collection day. Place yard waste in paper bags or open-top reusable containers. Do not use plastic bags.

Accepted Yard Waste

Grass clippings
Leaves and small branches
Weeds and garden trimmings
Plants and flowers
Brush and hedge trimmings

Branches must be tied in bundles no longer than 1.2 m (4 ft) and no heavier than 22 kg (50 lbs). Each bundle counts as one item toward your limit.

Large & Oversized Items

The Town of Newmarket offers a large-item collection program for bulky household goods. You must purchase a Large Item Tag ($17.00) for each oversized piece.

Large items accepted (with tag)

  • Sofas, chairs and mattresses
  • Tables and dressers
  • Appliances (stoves, washers, dryers)
  • Water heaters and furnaces
  • Bathtubs and sinks
  • Carpet and underpad (rolled & tied, under 50 lbs)

Item limits

Large items count toward your 3-item garbage limit. For example, if you put out one couch with a large-item tag, you can still place 2 regular garbage bags untagged.

Toilets can also be collected — detach the bowl from the tank, drain all water, and place it at the curb on your garbage day (counts as one item).

Note: Tires, electronics and household hazardous waste are never collected curbside. See below for where to take them.

What the Town Won't Collect — And How Forever Green Helps

Newmarket's curbside program is designed for regular household waste. There are many materials and situations it simply cannot handle. That's where Forever Green Bin Rental comes in — we are a locally owned Newmarket company with bins for the items the town won't touch.

Construction & Renovation Debris

Drywall, lumber, shingles, flooring, tiles and concrete are not accepted curbside. Our mixed-material and clean-fill bins handle renovation waste safely.

Concrete, Brick & Asphalt

Heavy materials need dedicated heavy-duty bins. We offer specialized concrete and asphalt bins designed for these dense loads.

Large Cleanouts & Estate Clearing

When a basement, garage or entire estate produces more than 6 bags of garbage, our 12, 15, 20 or 25-yard bins handle it in one go.

Landscaping & Major Yard Projects

Big tree removals, full-garden tear-outs and sod replacement generate far more debris than paper bags can hold. A 10 or 15-yard bin is the answer.

Need a Bin for Items the Town Won't Take?

Forever Green Bin Rental is a Newmarket-based, family-owned business serving all of York Region. We deliver driveway-protected bins with same-day or next-day service — perfect for cleanups, renovations and construction projects that exceed curbside limits.
