Can I Put My Dumpster Bin Rental On The Road?

If you have a seasonal cleaning or renovation project on your to-do list, a dumpster bin is the easiest and most cost-effective way to get rid of all that trash.

If this is your first time renting a bin, you may be wondering if you can place a dumpster bin on the street. The answer depends on several factors, including where you live and the time of year.

Let’s examine those factors a little more closely.

Where You Place The Dumpster

If you live in a new residential area filled with townhouses, the odds are driveway space is at a premium. You may be faced with deciding between parking your car or dumpster in your driveway. If you want to place the dumpster in your driveway or on another part of your private property, you will not need a permit.

If you need the dumpster bin to be placed on the street, we can do that for you, but you are responsible for obtaining a permit. Because the road is public property, a permit is generally required.

Where You Live

Where you live matters when considering parking a dumpster bin rental on the street, each municipality has different restrictions. Scanning our service region, you will find a variety of by-laws.

We deliver rental bins across the York Region, including Newmarket, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Keswick, Bradford, Holland Landing, and more. All of these locations have different by-laws and permitting requirements for placing a rental bin on the street. Some do not allow dumpsters on the road, while others allow it with a special permit.

Here is a snapshot of the regulations in municipalities across the region:

Georgina: The Town requires a Road Occupancy Permit when placing bins on the roadway or town-owned boulevard.

Newmarket: Rental bins are not permitted on the street, but the town offers parking exemptions that allow you to park your car in the street while the container takes up your driveway space.

Aurora: Dumpster bin rentals are not allowed on the road. Much like in Newmarket, Aurora offers Occasional Use on Street Parking Permits (OUPP), where you can apply for 12 free parking passes per vehicle to park your car on the road.

East Gwillimbury: No permits are issued to place a rental bin on the street. You can apply for a Free Parking Consideration, which allows for a maximum of 15 days to place your vehicles on the street.

Time of Year

Most towns and cities have parking restrictions in the winter months. In Newmarket, for example, parking restrictions extend from November 1 to April 15. These restrictions are in place to allow snow plows to clear the road properly. Vehicles (and dumpsters) are not permitted to park on the streets during this timeframe, and there may be no exemptions.

Other Factors

Before you obtain a permit, there are a few other factors you may want to consider before renting your roll-off dumpster bin, including:

  • Parking restrictions
  • Location of fire hydrants, bus stops, parking meters, and loading zones
  • Homeowners association rules and regulations
  • A safe distance from street corners
